Expressive Therapies

Expressive Therapies

Sandplay therapy, Symbol Work and the use of art in therapy are all “bottom-up therapeutic approaches”. This means that they utilize the wisdom of the body to promote psychological healing. We tend to think about stress and trauma as being stored only in the mind, however research has demonstrated that trauma is also experienced within the body. Therefore, these therapeutic approaches can help to integrate the experiences of the body and the mind for the purpose of processing and healing stress and trauma. These therapeutic approaches offer a gentle and non-confrontational atmosphere for exploration, and self-expression, and are suitable for individuals of all ages.

  • Sandplay Therapy

Sandplay therapy is a hands-on, expressive counselling approach that has been in use for over seventy years. It is used by psychologists and counsellors as a major extension or alternative to cognitive therapies among children, adolescents and adults. Sandplay forms a bridge between verbal therapy and the expressive therapies, combining elements of each. Sandplay therapy allows the client to represent an issue symbolically, which in turn provides a new perspective and potential solutions to problems. Symbols such as objects from nature, figurines, ornaments etc., are arranged in the sandtray to communicate and process feelings, explore issues, and assist with decisions.  Sandplay allows the deeper aspects of the psyche to be worked with naturally and in safety, often providing insights and information for healing. Sandplay therapy can also be highly effective in reducing the emotional causes that underlie difficult behaviours.

  • Symbol Work

Symbol Work uses the same equipment as Sandplay, however it is more directed, allowing the client and the counsellor to focus on specific areas for gathering information and dealing with one area of concern. Symbol Work is used with adults, children and adolescents and can help resolve personal problems, reclaim forgotten qualities, and provide a framework for the individual to reconnect with positivity and direction within themselves.

  • Art

The creative process of making art in therapy can be a safe way to express your inner experiences, to develop new awareness, and to support and explore strategies for personal change. This approach uses the materials such as paint, clay, pastels, crayons, and collage, as well as visualisation techniques, guided imagery, movement and role play. The use of art in therapy may to help you to express the inexpressible, cope with difficulties and explore new ways of being.
